Zumba and yoga on the road

Walking is a great way to burn off calories while in San Francisco, but it's not the only way.

From Eileen:  We all know how easy it is to fall off the exercise wagon when you are on the road. A trip to San Francisco last week reminded me how hard it is to keep motivated when you are off your regular routine.

San Francisco is a great walking city and there are plenty of hills to get your cardio in, but  there also are any number of places to pack in the calories!

So while I spent a great deal of time walking from one restaurant to the next, I also used the hotel gym whenever I could and I signed up for two exercise excursions.

I took a Zumba class at  24 Hour Fitness for $10 and I signed up for a 90-minute yoga hike for $20. Both offered the opportunity to get the heart rate up, burn a few calories, and see the city in a whole new light.

Ever take a Zumba class with about 50 other sweating bodies or do a downward facing dog on the Embarcadero? It was a completely different experience than wandering around Fisherman’s Wharf with a million other tourists.

Best of all, you are spending time with the locals … who can give you restaurant recommendations!

(If you want a healthy, delicious, organic meal, head off to Greens in Fort Mason or The Plant Cafe, with three locations, including one at Pier 3.)
